Santhal Uprising / Santhal Hul (1855–56): BPSC Prelims Notes
BPSC Prelims Demand
For BPSC, learn the uprising through year, place, leaders, causes and outcome: 1855–56; Bhognadih; Sidhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav; exploitation by colonial officials, police, moneylenders and zamindars; and the creation of the Santhal Parganas administrative arrangement. Treat modern geography and nineteenth-century history carefully.
Chronology
Causes: Do Not Reduce It to One Cause
Santhals faced a combined system of exploitation. The official account identifies colonial administration and police, moneylenders (mahajans), zamindars and other agents of the Raj. Debt at abusive rates, land loss, forced or bonded labour, revenue pressure, extortion and false legal cases deepened the grievance. In notes and answers, write colonial rule plus its local intermediaries, rather than blaming only one group.

Prelims Traps
1855–56 is the safest label for the main Santhal Uprising; some secondary listings use 1855–57. Read the year in the question carefully.
Bhognadih is in present-day Sahibganj, Jharkhand—not present Bihar.
The four names are Sidhu, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav; do not replace them with Birsa Munda.
Hul means rebellion/uprising; it is not the name of a land-revenue system.
Damin-i-koh is central to the movement; do not exchange it with the Deccan or Punjab.
The uprising began before 1857, but it was not the same event as the 1857 revolt.
