Why did the Movement Rise?
The movement combined land, forest, political, social and religious concerns. Adivasi/Munda communities faced loss of control over land, pressure from moneylenders and landlords, colonial interference and erosion of customary rights. Public official material also notes that the Indian Forest Act of 1882 restricted traditional forest rights. Birsa’s message promoted a renewed tribal identity, self-governance and the idea of Munda Raj; it cannot be reduced to a single religious or economic cause.

Prelims Traps
- Birsa Munda = Munda tribe; Sidhu-Kanhu = Santhal Hul.
- 1899–1900 is the standard Ulgulan period; avoid placing it in 1855 or 1917.
- Ulihatu: then Bihar, now Jharkhand.
- Ranchi jail, 9 June 1900: Birsa’s death in custody.
- 1908 is the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, not the year of the Ulgulan.
- “Great Tumult” and “Great Rebellion” are translations used for Ulgulan; give the term itself first in an answer.
