Quit India Movement / August Kranti (1942): BPSC Prelims Notes

BPSC Prelims Demand

Learn the two-date sequence with precision: the All India Congress Committee adopted the Quit India Resolution on 8 August 1942 at Gowalia Tank Maidan, Bombay/Mumbai; the nationwide movement and mass action are conventionally marked from 9 August. Prepare the “Do or Die” call, Second World War context, Cripps Mission background, repression, underground activity and the Bihar role of Jayaprakash Narayan.

Chronology

Background and Character

The movement came during the Second World War, after dissatisfaction with the Cripps proposals. It was led by Gandhi and the Indian National Congress and called for British withdrawal. The government responded by arresting important leaders at the beginning. Therefore, the movement had both a nationwide mass dimension and, after the arrests, decentralised/underground initiatives. Do not write that every action everywhere followed an identical method or timetable.
